Meheboob Khokhar, was a retired employee of Gujarat Electricity Board who had gone to Christchurch, New Zealand to visit his son for three months. The 65-year old was described by his son-in-law, Hafiz, as a man who would never miss his prayers at their Makkarnagar Society mosque in Johapura area of Ahmedabad. He continued this practice in New Zealand when visiting his son, Imran.
On that fateful Friday, Imran had dropped his father at the mosque and was parking the car when his father was killed by indiscriminate firing. Maheboob and his wife, Akhtar Begum was scheduled to leave back for Ahmedabad the very next day. “We were expecting him to join us in namaz from Sunday. His sudden death has come as a big shock. We never thought that he would not make it back,” said Khokhar’s friend.
